How to improve your memory for both short- and long-term recall is not as difficult as it may appear. Yes, there are techniques to improve memory however it does take practice to maintain a higher level of memory recall. Clinical research has shown that memory is an essential component of cognitive functioning and that this too can be improved (Jaeggi et al., 2008). This research also show that our IQ score is no longer a number that limits us. Read on to get tips on how to improve your memory and raise your IQ.

Tips on How to Improve Your Memory 1. Practice and rehearse Start by really understanding the topic or piece of information you wish to remember, then once you have the basic understanding in place you will need to keep rehearsing the information to ensures it sticks. That old saying of practice makes perfect is very relevant when you are trying to remember new things. If you want to make information come to mind automatically, you need to rehearse it regularly. Then you will be able to recall it quickly when you need to, whether that be for school, business or at social events.

2. Pay attention and engage with information Psychologists Craik and Lockhart found that the more attention we pay to the meaning of what we see, hear and learn, then the better we will remember it. They proved that improving our memory is a function of how effortful and meaningful our initial encoding of the information was. The outcome is if we process information on a deeper level, we will be better able to recall that information. Psychologists and teachers tell us that understanding something aids our memory and it is harder to remember things if we merely rote learning without fully comprehending the information.

3. Visualize and use imagery We live in a visual world which means there are many ways that we can use the power of visual imagery as a memory aid. For example, try using a mind map, where we imagine a map of the information or a tree with the branches that stem out each holding an important and relevant fact or nugget of information. Another example is to imagine a cloakroom with each of the pegs holding a piece of information. Whatever method you prefer, the key point is that when we visualize the information as we study or learn it, we can recall it later much easier.

4. Try Drawing Drawing is a great way to help anyone with remembering new information, but especially for older adults. This has been backed up from research conducted at the University of Waterloo in Canada. They found that drawing out words and drawing the physical attributes of a word enhanced the memory of older adults with possible benefits for people suffering from dementia. Drawing is a memory encoding technique that works cross generational and kids find it fun and educational.

5. Start using acronyms Research has shown that our brains are better at retrieving things when we associate meaning to them. When we were in school, a teacher or parent likely taught us to use acronyms and my guess is that most of us still remember some version of these. Remember this one? to memorize the directions on the compass, we use the acronym NEWS (North, East, West, and South). Or this one? “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas” (Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto). Not only are acronyms fun and they really work. You can also use a similar technique if you are trying to remember names at a party or gathering (e.g., Black orange boots for Bob or Purple attire things for Pat. Go ahead and make up your own acronyms for anything you want to remember. The trick is to list the thing you want to memorize and arrange it in an order such that the first letter of each word spells a real word.

6. Pay attention to the beginnings and endings Research on how to improve your memory points to the fact that that we remember more at the beginning and end of learning sessions or lessons. Now none is suggesting you zone out in the middle of a lesson, lecture or training session. This is about being aware of our optimal memory times. So, listen up and pay closer attention to the introductions and conclusions when being presented with information. Always ask a teacher or the presenter to summarize the main points of the lesson or lecture again at the end.

They showed that routine meditative practice is associated with a long-lasting change in the topology of definite brain areas, suggesting that meditation might be able to induce brain plasticity.

9. Read It Out Aloud You may remember from your school days, when your teacher asked you to stand up and read out aloud a story or poem. Well, a team at the University of Waterloo found that you’re more likely to remember written information if you read it out aloud. The consensus is that reading combined with hearing yourself reading can have a positive effect to improve your memory. Other studies also confirm that learning and memory benefit from active involvement. When a person adds an active element to a word (reading it out aloud), that word becomes more distinct in long-term memory, and so more memorable.

In previous blogs, I have outlined the rationale behind this training and argued that a Relational Frame Theory (RFT) approach to intellectual development may hold the key to a functional approach to brain training. That is, RFT claims to have identified some basic building blocks of intellectual development, which center around the ability to understand complex inter-relations among stimuli. For example, understanding that if something is opposite to two other things, then those two things must be the same as each other, involves a relation skill. As another example, if one object is worth more than another, the second one is worth less than the first. The idea that these skills not only underlie intelligence, but constitute it, is core to RFT, a modern behavioral approach, although it sits well with more mainstream cognitive approaches.

While most of us are relatively proficient in basic relational skills, we are actually quite deficient in solving more complex relational problems. To address this deficiency, a form of online brain training called SMART training (Strengthening mental abilities with relational training) was developed by Relational Frame Theory researchers at Maynooth University.

The Cassidy et al. study is the second such study to be published by the Maynooth University team to show that SMART training can increase general intelligence as measured by standardized IQ tests, such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). This new study, however, provides additional evidence that scholastic ability, as measured by a gold standard aptitude test known as the Differential Aptitude Test (DATs), also increases as a result of this very particular form of intellectual skills training.

As documented in previous research, the IQ rises cannot be easily accounted for by practice at the IQ test, because the IQ test was administered only twice, with a several month interval between administrations. Furthermore, IQ rises due to practice are usually very small compared to the rises reported in this latest study. Further still, the training administered to the sample of 11-12 year old children employed in Experiment 1 of this study, was dissimilar to an IQ test. The same applies to the DATs aptitude test. This was administered only twice, and the increases in scores observed for numerical and verbal reasoning far outstripped the increases expected by practice at the test itself. This is the second SMART study to achieve what critics of “brain training” treat as the benchmark for acceptable brain training; the transfer of skills from the training to other tasks. In this regard the Cassidy study provides more evidence that brain training can work to enhance essential intellectual skills, at least if it focuses on relational skills, or what RFT researchers call Arbitrarily Applicable Relational Responding.

A common criticism of brain training is that while it may improve some cognitive skills needed to complete the training, any benefits may have no practical relevance to daily life. In the current study, however, a sample of 30 14-15 year old children were tracked across several months of online training, 2-3 times per week for 30-45 minutes. Practice at relational skills, increased their numerical and verbal reasoning abilities, as measured by the DATs (administered and scored by independent third parties) by a significant degree. Together these numerical indices are used by educators to assess a child’s overall “educational aptitude”, which is the child’s ability to perform well in school across the board. By finding a significant increase in scholastic ability, the current study suggests that SMART relational skills training can make a real and measurable difference to the educability of a child.

While more evidence is always required when such promising results are reported by any new Brain Training method, the case is mounting that a relational frame theory approach to intellectual development may indeed have identified some basic building blocks of intelligence, once thought to be an unchangeable trait.

Dual N-Back Game

Dual N-back or n-back game is a brain training game which helps improve working memory and fluid intelligence. The n-back brain game focuses concentration by typically displaying a figure on a board, the figure then appears in different positions and the player has to remember the position of the figure one turn or two turns back. Hence the name N-back training.

When we say, fluid intelligence, we are referring to the ability of a person (adult or child) to reason and to solve new problems independently of previously acquired knowledge. Fluid intelligence is critical for a wide variety of cognitive tasks, and it is considered one of the most important factors in learning. Also, fluid intelligence is related to professional and educational success, especially in complex and demanding environments.

Working memory is also important in the learning process and for general intelligence. Working memory can be described as ‘how much information or data a person can think about at the same time’. N-back training is now widely used in psychological, educational, clinical, and medical settings. Psychologists split intelligence into two types: the first being “crystallized intelligence” which is all about how to knowledge (put to use when you type); and the second being “fluid intelligence” which is about problem solving and reasoning.
